Ki - mind, body, universe

The Chinese word Qi is a word based on observation of natural phenomena by highly perceptive individuals. Deep perception goes beyond words so the definition of Qi is something that is on the one hand not clear in words but yet can be perceived. In the I Ching we have Heaven and Earth and the simultaneous interaction of these two forces in man.The centripetal descent of heaven is Water and the centrifugal growth from Earth is Fire. Therefore Qi in the I Ching can be represented by these two movements taken together i.e. hexagram 64 objective Infinity and 63 Subjective Infinity. These two are constantly able to transform from one into the other by the nuclear trigram or by inversion or by opposites so that this interaction between heaven and earth although infinitely changing is infinitely stable. To attain Qi i.e. 63 from ego we must learn to act and feel at the same time, without seeking a reward for our action or basing our action on inappropriate past feelings as in hexagram 54, where the nuclear trigram brings us directly to 63.To attain Qi as a follower in a group we must tread a more difficult and hazardous path. Following....Politics....Objective Infinity. For many people Qi is impossible to perceive because they are fettered by either the limitations of centripetal selfishness or by centrifugal desire

and are unilaterally and exclusively attached either to their thoughts to the exclusion of their feelings or to their feelings to the exclusion of their thoughts. If we let go of selfishness and desire and allow ourselves the freedom to act and to feel as one, without attachment to malego and femego then we start to perceive the true nature of the universe and this is Qi. In the martial art of Ki-Aikido the nature of Ki can be easily demonstrated by using the stability/instability of the human body as a a reliable test of the presence or absence of Ki. To study Ki is difficult but we can easily see the effect of Ki in the body. In Ki-aikido we learn to lead the Ki of our partner and to maintain the stability of our body by keeping one point in the lower abdomen and extending Ki with our minds while keeping our body's relaxed and with the weight underside. In Acupuncture without the theory of Qi it is difficult to explain the fact that needling which neither adds nor subtracts any substance instantly normalises the amplitude and hardness of an excessive organ pulse. Ki moves in all directions inwardly and outwardly but in the meridians of acupuncture it appears to flow and have direction. Mind moves body but mind itself does not move but disappears from one place and appears in another. Thus body follows mind from one point of disappearance to a new point of concentration. One acupuncture point is where Ki is either infinitely concentrating, disappearing & moving or infinitely expanding, stopping and appearing. At acupuncture points ki seems to expand anticlockwise and concentrate clockwise. If the right hand touches an acupuncture point it perceives any anticlockwise movement while the left hand perceives any clockwise movement.

Two dreams, one reality
I see two dreams; a fearful one of thought in isolation from feeling, and an angry one of feeling in isolation from thought. On the one hand, desire is isolated thought and lust is isolated feeling, while, on the other hand, firstly respect is the necessary precondition where excess feeling can be harmoniously integrated with thought, and, secondarily, love is the necessary precondition where excess thought can be harmoniously integrated with feeling. I also see one reality beyond these two dreams, which can be reached by the path of harmoniously integrated feeling and thought. Where people wish to awake from their dreams, love and respect are waxing, while desire and lust are waning. The unenlightened souls follow the endless paths of anger and fear, lust and desire, births and deaths. But those who apply truth to themselves and not to others aspire to openhearted leadership not frightened dictatorship while those who bestow their caring on others and not themselves understand that human duties are far more important than human rights and they place respectful commited following above angry opinionated winging. Leading with an open heart unifies mind and body subjectively, while following the openhearted leader with total commitment creates loyalty which in its turn creates unification of mind and body objectively. Subjective and objective mind and body unification have a constant self-generating mutual exchange and this is the true nature of a loving, powerful, wise & infinite universe.

Significance Of The Number 28

In the practice of Taoist spirituality, the Big Dipper, the 28 constellations, the sun and moon, and the first 5 planets are used as the most responsive natural energy and the supernatural connection with life on earth. These heavenly bodies are actually the background for earthly energy. Each of them is in a different cyclic pattern and they all have a direct and indirect influence on human life. The general area of Polaris (the North Star) is the center of the circle. From this North Pole the 4 directions are identified and located. Since each direction has 7 constellations, there is a total of 28 constellations, in the combined four directions. The eastern 7 are symbolized by a green dragon;the western seven by a white tiger; the southern seven by a red bird; and the northern seven by a black turtle. The four colours distinguish the different subtle energy rays. Why did the ancient Taoists divide the fixed stars along the "Yellow Route" (ecliptic, i.e. the apparent annual path of the sun in the celestial sphere) into 28 constellations? There are two reasons. First, the constellations are connected to the moon and it takes 28 days for the moon to move from the west to east among the fixed stars. This is called a sidereal month. The twenty-eight days are divided into 28 regions which are courier stations, or traveling houses for the moon. Secondly, the ancient Taoists recognized that it takes 28 years for Saturn to make a revolution around the sun. In the same way that the constellations are "on duty" for Earth, they are also "on duty" for Saturn. For Saturn, however, the constellation is "on duty" for a yearly cycle, whereas it is "on duty" for Earth for a daily cycle. Every year Saturn enters another constellation. This is called "to hold authority over one constellation for one year."The number of stars in each constellation is not equal. For example, there are 32 stars in the eastern 7 constellations, 51 stars in the western 7, 64 in the southern 7, and 35 in the northern 7. The total 182 stars are all set around the ecliptic of the sun. The shapes of the different constellations were drawn by the ancient ones using naked-eye observations, and a few constellations have changed since then.

Concept Of Disease

Illness is defined as a primary centripetal experience, that is a subjectively perceived feeling of indisposition : Disease by contrast, is a socially determined product, a conceptual reshaping of the primary experience of illness. Therefore one illness may in different societies be perceived as different diseases. The Shang recognised many illnesses but few diseases.Of these few diseases the most important by far was "Curse Of An Ancestor".When food is scarce in times of famine feelings become dominant over thoughts because without nourishment the body loses its ability to move and centrifugal energy and the power of thought wanes. In these Zero growth economies where ' Centripetal Mind ' predominates the main social disharmony could be local resentment by those who produced insufficient harvests, and this was socially unacceptable devisive and dangerous. Zero growth economies without free movement of labour <unlike growth oriented economies with free movement of labour>require orderly and equal distribution of the total harvest amongst members where the needy and sensitive are helped by the powerful and better off in return for prestiege eg 'Fiestas' in Latin America, 'ngbaya' in South Africa, & Potlatch with the Indians in the Pacific North West. Because resentment takes root in those whose minds are in the past it was only natural to consider that 'The Ancestors' were also resentful, & that equal distribution of resources ought to include them as well.' Centripetal Mind ' centres on individual or local responsibility. So that the conduct advocated by the ' Medicine of Systematic Correspondence ' for the preservation of good health conformed to a large degree with the norms of Confucian political philosophy for the maintenance of harmony and order in society. But the predominance of feelings in this age tended to foster an unhealthy ' lets be a victim ' philosophy.

Concept Of Disease In

growth economies where 'Centrifugal Mind' predominates' the main social disharmony could be a core of fear amongst those, who, having accumulated more than others are frightened that they might have it taken from them. The Chou Dynasty 1100 - 256 BC and the Warring States 481 BC - 221 BC marked an epoch of greed where success and killing all your vanquished opponents replaced chivalry and the concept of letting your opponent live to fight on another day.In 213 BC the First Emperor Shih Huang Ti wanted to secure his power by burning most historical books and outlawing criticism of the present by reference to the past.He did not want people to go behind his back. Now it was not the resentment or curse of the Ancestors but the invasion of ' Evil Spirits ' & ' Demons 'or poisons which were responsible for everyday misfortunes and personal illness. To expel these demons it was necessary to use either shouts, threats or medicines. The assumption in these growth economies was that if you have a body, a form, and possessions suffering is inevitable and unavoidable;for only formlessness and lack of possessions is free of disease and worry. The inevitability of illness and the need for a healing system devoted to the treatment of existing suffering, implicitly questions personal responsibility for one's health & the need to follow health-preserving moral dictums enshrined in Confucian ideals. Instead a sick man seeks to ally himself with some external force or controlling influence or herb or fashionable doctor who/which will expel or destroy the demons or evil spirit . In this system thought seeks to gain something material which is esteemed by ' the group-accepted-political-view ' and extinguish the spiritual flame that burns in the heart of every living individual.
