Day 5

Very bad night, face is so itchy. The growing beard doesn't help either. Lots more pox appearing, but some scabbing over. Temperature still high. Getting pox further down arms and torso, arms, buttocks, genitals, feet, hands, ears, mouth and I think my throat. I hate this. Can't look in mirror. On plus side have still got my appetite. Still bathing and using calamine lotion, not helping much. For my personal circumstances painkillers every 4 hours are a must since fever still there, and when they wear off I feel rough. Got the cough again, a dry chesty one.

Friends and family from around the world have been calling/emailing/IM'ing, and it does give me a boost. Its amazing how many adults do get chickenpox. The stories of peoples recoveries are uplifting.

Today has been the lowest day so far in this journey. Not looking forward to tonight. So tired. It is becoming very apparent that to fight this virus you need a positive mental attitude. Easier said than done. Will sign off now.

A colleague mentioned yesterday that I probably have a reinfection, which is why I've had such a mild form of the disease. Interesting. My mother certainly doesn't remember my getting CP...

Anyhow, when I first started logging on to this, I wondered when the peak would be for me. I turns out it was probably days 3 and 4, since yesterday, Day 5 I was noticeably better. The night between days 4 and 5--I was able to sleep through without any CP related interruptions. Similar quality of sleep last night (between days 5 and 6)

Yesterday during the day I didn't feel inspired to take my oatmeal/baking soda bath (whereas on Days 3 and 4 there were moments I felt I desperately needed to do something creative argh!)

I did get a headache later in the day, but of course paracetamol alleviated that quickly. I guess right now I'm just a little annoyed at how little work I've managed to do considering how relatively well I've been...

Plus I remember thinking--oh I can finally scratch my head without a lot of pain. We aren't supposed to be scratching, but really I mean just the light scratching once in a while, not CP scratching. And before, when I've wanted to do so, as soon as I'd touch my head, it would be really painful because it would be additional pressure on the rash. I'd regret touching my head pretty much immediately.

Before going to bed, my last routine was to put Tiger Balm on my scalp and edges of my face (or wherever it felt unbearable and distracting). Last night... it was still helpful but I could tell not as necessary. I even had to search around my scalp for the occasional painful papule/vesicle before applying the TB...

I'm not sure I'm able to see whether there are new bumps (papules) or not. I can definitely recognise the vesicle stage better. .. perhaps can do an inspection at some point.

Wow, if I look at this picture
http://dermnetnz.org/viral/varicella.html

I really do have a much less severe rash than those pictures. My face has looked much more like my face (albeit with scabs) since Day 5 I think... the papules/vesicles really distorted my face (and I could feel the pressure!) the days before...

Cool!

I am 25 and got chicken pox. Your blog is a biggest support for me, thank you so much for putting this together. I see that you mentioned it got to your genitals?

Mine got scabbed over from head and the rest of the body, on day 5, including the ones on soles and palms.

But, here is where i need your help so I can be in peace. You said it was on your genital as well. I just noticed I had 2 ulcer/sore on the head of my penis, which didnt hurt. Is this part of chicken pox, considering Im virgin by choice and never even had oral sex before? Was it the same for you?
Im having it now Day5 at 35 yo and dying. Damn! Day 5 is not as itchy or painful but still feeling oh-so-weak and getting pretty fed up of it thinking "When will they dry up and scab?" Day2&3 were the worst for me. And no moral support totally sux. And i have 2,3 & 6 year old kids. Its been a 3-day weekend with a Public Holiday tmrw (Monday) and the kids take turns spending each day at a grandma's home. But as a mother i worry abt them getting it frm me a lot too although i did hurriedly get them vaccinated on my Day2. And we planned and booked a 1 Night hotel stay at a beach place for the coming Labour Day weekend and now not sure if we can go....sorry for the rant. I just had to let it all out i guess...

Day 231

Most of the brown scars have not pretty much vanished. Once or two very faint ones left. Quite a few little craters but can't really see them on the face. One larger crater on cheek but thats ok, got used to it now. Have stopped applying the Mederma and Bio-Oil everyday. Just put them on now and then. Few brown scars on body particularly around the waist, they will remain.

Day 22

Well, over the course of the last few weeks since I last posted all the scabs on my body have fallen off. No marks left from the ones from the body just faint pink ones for some spots. However, when the scabs fell of face, they were pink first now gone brown, so have all these brown blemishes over face. Dr says they should fade but will take a very long time! He said immediate solution could be laser treatment, but will wait and see. Shaved the beard off few days ago which is great but reveals more brown spots so growing stubble back. Been rubbing BioOil at night, and Dr suggested I use Mederma few times a day [Please seek your own medical advice]. One lymph node still a little swollen, Dr said it will probably stay like that but to keep an eye on it. Still had a few scabs on scalp, almost all gone.

Day 3

Woke up in the night feeling hot and sweaty. By morning one or two pale red spots on face, and a watery boil on arm. Decided to go and see my GP. He immediately confirmed chicken pox. He told me to just ride it through since he couldn't prescribe anything for it. He suggested baths with bicarbonate soda added, paracetamol four times a day, Calamine lotion to rub on the pox and an anti-histamine to reduce the itchiness. [Remember, you must seek your own medical advice!]. By afternoon many more red marks and water boils appearing all over scalp, face, neck, arms, chest and back. Took a bath in warm water with two table spoons bicarbonate soda added. Didn't seem to do too much. Continued with paracetamol, last one was at 16h00. Went to bed at 11h00 not feeling to bad except for obvious itching (have not taken the anti-histamine yet). Couldn't sleep, was just getting comfortable.
