airport lounge gatwickAlthough hundreds of millions of people use airports all over the world each year, relatively few of these weary travellers make use of the wonderful airport lounge facilities that the majority of major airports offer.  It is a general assumption that most people make that the lounges are available only for first class travellers or for VIPs, but this simply isn't the case!  Many airports offer once-off purchases of lounge use, whilst many airlines offer their first, business and frequent flyer passengers the use of the lounge for free.

Airport lounges have been around for several decades and were introduced as a way to offer an additional 'top class' service to passengers.  In much the same way that first class airline tickets offer passengers more seat space, better food selection and better attention from staff, airport lounges offer travellers comfier seats (some have recliners and massage chairs), a range of food and drink (buffets and bars are popular), and a wide selection of entertainment (internet access - often wireless, cable television, magazines and newspapers, and often a games section for children) are some of the ways lounges aim to make your wait at the airport that bit more enjoyable.  In some of the larger international airports, lounges have taken on an entirely new level of comfort - some offer quiet rooms for sleeping, whilst others offer massage, aromatherapy, gym facilities, spa and sauna facilities, and even swimming pools!

Even if you don't want to become a permanent member of a lounge, a once-off purchase can be one of the best ways to pass your time whilst waiting for your plane to board.
