Avis has a great promotion going on through the end of the year for USAA members. For mid- and full-size rentals, if you rent a car for the weekend (minimum 3 days) you get one of those days for free. Price probably varies, but in Jax this comes to about $18/day, unlimited miles.

Another note on rental cars...if you plan on going on a weekend trip and driving 3 or more hours to get there, you may want to consider getting a rental, especially with a deal like this. Fifty bucks is well worth saving the wear-and-tear on your own car (you can drive the hell out of your rental, no harm done). Plus you get to drive a car with decent fuel economy, so if you normally drive a truck or SUV, you might save enough on gas to pay for the rental.

To get the Avis/USAA deal, log in to your USAA account, click on the "Shopping & Discounts" tab on the top menu, then click on the "Avis" graphic and go from there. I've done it a few times already, nothing but good things to say about it!

Rented a Chevy Impala from Avis, not a really good car (I know, it was a base model) but it served its purpose, for a 2000 mile trip up and down the Southeast 3 weeks ago. A seven day rental cost me $154 because of the USAA discount, less than half of the original price. I have no idea how that worked out but I was not about to ask too many questions.

How do you guys deal with under-25 rentals? Providing that any of you are under 25? I thought they waived it for being in the military, but they only do that if you are TDY. I'm going to get screwed on a rental.

If you're a USAA member you can rent from Avis with a credit card. And I think you can rent from Enterprise under 25, but it aint cheap. Avis waives the 25 requirement for USAA members and the rates are the same from what I can tell.

Thanks Greg. You just saved me a boat load of $$. Enterprise was going to charge me around $250 for the week.... Avis costs $100.... I really appreciate it.
