New Natural Sciences Building Opening Fall 2024

Áak'w Tá Hít is a center dedicated to scientific research and student learning. The new coastal facility houses the classrooms, laboratories, and field research operations necessary for scientists and students to address the complex environmental questions facing the planet.

UAS in the News

Federally funded project will look for rare earth elements in seaweed

The Southeast Alaska project will launch in March with collection and analysis of various types of seaweed around the southern end of Prince of Wales Island. The project is trying to determine whether significant amounts of rare earth elements are being absorbed by that seaweed from Bokan Mountain, which is known to contain several of those minerals.

Beyond that, the project will examine the possibilities for cultivating enough seaweed to make it worthwhile to extract those absorbed critical elements, said the project’s lead researcher, UAF’s Schery Umanzor.

Internship scholarship supports teacher education student

The Alaska College of Education Consortium (ACEC), encompassing the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), and University of Alaska Southeast (UAS), has announced the second year of its Teacher Internship Scholarship Program.

This initiative, supported by the collaborative efforts of the Alaska State Legislature, Governor, and UA President Pat Pitney, and coordinated with the assistance of ACEC Liaison Bridget Weiss, highlights the strength of unity in advancing educational opportunities across the state.

Priscilla Schulte set to retire as UAS KTN director, will continue teaching

University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan Campus Director Priscilla Schulte will retire from her director position at the end of December, and will continue to teach classes in her role as professor of anthropology and sociology.
