Tom Joyner Cruise

The Tom Joyner Cruise is an annual cruise hosted by radio personality Tom Joyner. Joyner, host of the syndicated The Tom Joyner Morning Show, began his broadcasting career in Montgomery, Alabama. He made his way to Chicago and accepted a position with top-rated 107.5 WGCI. Mr. Joyner was offered another position with K104 KKDA in Dallas at the same time, so he accepted that position too. For years he flew between the morning show in Dallas and the afternoon show in Chicago, which earned him the nickname “The Fly Jock.” Most fans and listeners also knew Joyner by the name “The Hardest Working Man in Radio.”

Today The Tom Joyner Morning Show, backed by ABC, consists of a team of reporters, comics, and commentators. The show also features guests and the latest R&B hits. Tom Joyner is more than a radio personality. He also founded the Tom Joyner Foundation, which provides funding for African-American students that are either on their way to or already attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Joyner’s foundation raised more then $55 million over the past 10 years. Mr. Joyner is also an author, an advocate for voter registration, and a fan if fitness. He promotes both through his morning show and through programs that encourage people to visit the doctor regularly.

As part of the Tom Joyner Foundation, Mr. Joyner hosts the Tom Joyner Cruise. Officially called The Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise, this “entertainment party” helps raise money for the foundation. Considered the “#1 cruise for professional African Americans and people of color,” the 2009 Tom Joyner Cruise will take place aboard Royal Caribbean’slargest and most luxurious cruise ship – Mariner of the Seas. While the itinerary may vary year to year, the 2009 Tom Joyner Cruise departs from Los Angeles, California and visits ports of calls such as Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Mazatlan Mexico; and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Cruises usually last seven days.

In addition to raising money for the Tom Joyner Foundation, the Tom Joyner Cruise is also a place for professionals to network and mingle in a festive environment with a purpose. Tom Joyner Cruise typically features: art auctions, comedic entertainment, beach parties, deck parties. musical entertainment, book clubs, and group work-outs.

Prices for the Tom Joyner Cruises vary depending on the type of accommodations. Prices may range from $1,855 for an interior stateroom (2 guests, price is per guest) up to $4,825 for family suites 4-8 guests (cost is per guest). The Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise website states that: “The total cost of the stateroom can be obtained by multiplying the stateroom capacity by the cost per person.”

It is important to keep in mind that: “portion of the price includes a tax deductible donation to the Foundation. The cruise is a fundraiser and allows the Foundation to contribute an additional $1 million to college students annually. That’s why we call this ‘A Party with a Purpose.'”
