Dermal Fillers (Restylane and Perlane)
As we age, our skin gradually loses its natural elasticity which can lead to the areas, particularly around the lips and nose, to appear more folded and wrinkled. Restylane, Restylane Fine and Perlane are the most commonly used treatments for these areas. . Restylane (and its family of treatments such as Perlane) are entirely non animal, naturally occurring products that can be injected underneath the surface of the skin to help provide support for the skin so smoothing out the wrinkles and folds.

Yes. They are made from a gel containing water and hyaluronic acid which is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. This means that they are completely natural and safe. Over 700,000 of the treatments have been given worldwide.
When injected under the surface of skin, that has lost its natural supporting tissue(which has caused the line or wrinkle) it leads to a smoothing out of the line or wrinkle resulting in a fresher looking more youthful appearance.
Sometimes, some of the injections can be a bit uncomfortable, therefore we usually use a local anaesthetic cream prior to treatment. Treatments done on the lips can be quite sore so we usually give a local anaesthetic injection before treatments for these.
Who is suitable for treatment?
At your consultation a full medical history will be taken and your face examined and assessed as to the suitability of using fillers. In general terms, anybody who is not pregnant or breast feeding, hasn’t been treated with the drug roaccutane(usually used for treating acne) in the last 12 months and hasn't had recent treatment such as skin resurfacing or a chemical peel in the last 6 weeks, is suitable for treatment.
Can they be used in combination with other treatments?
Yes. Fillers can be used after a surgical face lift or in combination Botox or after a chemical peel (after a period of 6 weeks.) It is not recommended to use them with permanent implants or with other fillers until they have naturally broken down.
The gel gradually breaks down, so the effect will last anything from 6 to 12 months-this being dependant on a variety of factors such as your age, skin type muscle activity etc.
What happens if I don’t have a follow up treatment?
If you don't have a follow up treatment, your face will gradually return to its original pre treatment state.
Can I return to work afterwards?
After the treatment there are no restrictions on driving or returning to work etc. However as some people may experience some localised swelling or bruising, they may prefer not to return to work straight away.
After the injection there may be some localised swelling, tenderness and redness of the skin around where it was treated. This usually lasts 1-2 days though may be a little longer for treatment of the lips.
