STEP BROTHERS

Step Brothers is one of the stupidest movies I’ve seen in a long time. Now, depending on your sense of humor, that can be a very good thing or a very bad thing. In this case, it’s not a great thing.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly play adults who live at home who are suddenly thrust together when their single parents meet and marry. Ferrell, Reilly and director Adam McKay co-wrote the movie. The premise is pretty funny, but the whole thing is really over the top.

Ferrell and Reilly are very good, but they’re not particularly likable. They do have a great chemistry and work really well off each other. Adam Scott is also very good as Ferrell’s extremely unlikable brother, and he held his own with the two leads. Not an easy task! Playing his wife is Kathryn Hahn who was very funny and kind of disturbing.

I knew going in that Step Brothers would be funny, and possibly stupid, but I was surprised by just how crazy and unbelievable it is. Still, I did laugh quite a bit, at times loud and hard, so I can’t really dis this movie too much. I guess I expected more. Taladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, the last Judd Apatow, Ferrell, and Reilly collaboration turned out to be a rental for me. I guess I could have waited for the DVD on this one, too.
