Alexander Technique - Catharine Gunningham

About Catharine Gunningham

Catharine Gunningham - Alexander Technique in North London I came to the Alexander Technique through recurring back and shoulder problems which had failed to respond, other than briefly, to therapies of various kinds. Working in an office, often at a computer, the pains increased.

With the Technique, I discovered just how much tension I carried with me in my everyday life and that it was how I was doing things which was leading to my problems. Increasingly as I had regular individual lessons, I felt better in myself – happier, calmer, and usually free of the nagging pains I’d had for many a year. So after 18 months of lessons, I was keen to take the Technique further and to learn to teach it to others. So I left my job and undertook the three–year full–time training at the London Centre for Alexander Technique and Training.

I work primarily in Stoke Newington in North East London. But I also work at Uppingham School in Rutland, individually teaching Alexander Technique to 13-18 year olds.

I am a member of The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT).

‘It's a great feeling and I enjoy it! not least because the teacher's clear explanation, sympathetic understanding and non-judgemental attitude create an atmosphere of calm, reassurance and encouragement.’
Katie, Retired Population Scientist

‘I went to Catharine for about 3 months because I had had horrible neck ache over quite a long period. Gradually during the sessions the pain eased as I learned how I was straining my neck in my habitual ways of sitting and moving. I learnt how to undo some of these habits and continue to benefit way after the lessons ended.’
