Training
ADA Scotland run a variety of courses which can in certain circumstances be adapted to meet the needs of the trainees or venues.
Audio Description Skills
Trainees are advised to listen in to an audio described performance at least once before commencing training.
A course manual is provided for reference and study. There will be tutorial and practical sessions on:
- the principles of audio description
- introductions and recaps
- touch tours
- language skills
- script preparation
- teamwork
- shadowing a qualified describer
- use of broadcasting equipment
- contracts and quality monitoring
- a brief summary of the background and history of audio description
- information regarding various aspects of blindness
- government legislation on access
Refresher Workshop for Audio Describers
- touch tours
- introductions, recaps, lead-ins
- live commentary
- hands-on team work with a script
- constructive criticism
Sometimes one of the above may form the basis for a refresher workshop. It is more usual for a combination of two or more of these topics to be combined in one workshop.
Welcome and Safe Guiding
A short instruction course to enable venue staff (from marketing and box office to ushers and bar staff) to create an accessible service for their patrons with a sight problem. A booklet is available for in-house training.
