Your partner opens 1 and you have 8 or more points. If you bid a suit
you must have at least a 5-card suit, otherwise you probably bid 1NT. If your partner
bids a new suit suggesting it as trump, the bid triggers SAB, the Support Asking Bid.
These are the responses:
SAB Step Bid Responses
1st Step
Poor Support
0-3 controls
2nd Step
4+ controls
3rd Step
Moderate Support
0-3 controls
4th Step
4+ controls
5th Step
Good Support
0-3 controls
6th Step
4+ controls
Definitions
An ace is two controls, and a king is one control.
Moderate support is either three small cards or could be a doubleton honor.
Good support is four small cards or three with an honor.
If you show poor support, then opener's next bid is natural; a new suit is probably only
a 4-card suit with a hand unsuitable for a notrump rebid.
If you show moderate or good support for partner's suit then the opener can continue using
asking bids with either CAB the Control Asking Bid or perhaps
SAB which is the Side Suit Asking Bid.
