About PHYSICS

The science which explores with the nature and properties of matter and energy.

Physics

Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines, and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves. Physics studies matter, its behaviour and movement through space and time, as well as the relative quantities of energy and force. The sub-topics of Physics include heat, light and other radiation, sound, mechanics, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.

Study in Physics is ongoing, particularly to find a "theory of everything", which is one of the major unsolved problems in Physics.  This potential theory should provide a  theoretical framework that fully explains and links together all physical aspects of the universe. New ideas in Physics often explain the fundamental mechanisms in other sciences, and can potentially suggest new fields of research. For example, advances in mechanics inspired the development of calculus. Progress in the understanding of Physics are often in parallel with the development of new technologies. For example, the development of modern day items such as the television, computers, domestic appliances are due to advances in the understanding of electromagnetism and nuclear physics.

Physics combines a theoretical foundation with practical experimental work. At all levels students should have the ability to test out concepts to see how the basic theory can be applied.
Students who study Physics have a wide range of career options open to them. The potential careers include Engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, mechatronics, design and  natural resource), Architecture, Medical Physics, environmental monitoring, telecommunication, research science, Physical teacher or lecturer, patent law, aerospace, flying, electricity production and supply, electronics, IT consultancy, diverse applications in industry and in industrial development.

NCEA Physics

Level 1
Physics at Level 1 serves as an excellent foundation for Level 2 Physics but provides knowledge to understand the essential Physics ideas that are required for the understandning of many other subjects. The concepts of motion, forces, energy, waves, electricity and magnetism are studied in depth.

Level 2
Physics at Level 2 has a greater applied component  than Level 1, including practical assessments and extended investigations. The same range of topics are covered as in the Level 1 course, however it build on these by extending into: projectiles, circular motion, momentum, gravity, kinetic theory, wave interference and diffraction. It also introduces the new topic areas of radioactivity and atomic physics.

Level 3
Physics at Level 3 extends the concepts in Levels 1 & 2 even further, including with a lot of new material based on the theme of simple harmonic motion. The topics include circular motion, simple harmonic motion, waves, AC circuits and atomic physics. The course is based on practical work and explaining the physics of situations rather than simply relying on calculations.

Physics with AHeadStart

"I would like to thank you very much, your professional service and Jackson's tuition have been fantastic, and has really made all the difference to Edie's stress levels (rather the lack of stress) and understanding of physics, and has been a huge boost to her confidence. She actually won the Excellence in Physics cup, and although she says that this is purely because she goes to a school where there is a very small class size and very little competition in the field, I have been assured by the staff that they don't give out the prize if there is not a deserving recipient! So please pass on our thanks to Jackson, as his tuition has been behind her success. That success and confidence has also contributed very much to her overall self-esteem, which is so important at this time of life!"
