WWI 1916/1917 Imperial German Durkopp Werke Model 1898/05 G98 Mauser Butcher Bayonet, Steel Scabbard & Leather Frog. BAYO 440. - BAYO 440
Durkopp Werke A.G were well established makers of sewing machines, Bicycles, cars & lorries before WWI. The Company’s distinctive trademark includes the Company name & large ‘D’ enclosing a factory. They were producing bayonets in 1916 & 1917 some of which are dated & others as with our example are without date. Durkopp also finished blank blades for other companies but this is made by Durkopp as it is without any other company name (see German Bayonets page 70 by Carter). This is a nice WW1 era Imperial German Model 1898/05 G98 Mauser Butcher bayonet by Durkopp. The back edge of the 14 ½” butcher blade has indistinct inspection marks. The blade has just light staining consistent with age and is crisply marked with the Durkopp manufacturer name and trademark. The grooved wood grips are original and un-damaged. *Rare Maker* Nazi Firemans Dress Bayonet & Scabbard by Maker Geco Solingen. Sn 11522:3. - Sn 11522:3
This is a Fireman's Dress Bayonet and scabbard. The basic design is taken from the standard military dress bayonet but is without the rifle mortise and stud button. The crossguard is lengthened to give a re curve appearance. This is the standard version with the 9 ¾ “blade and has a rare makers logo "Geco" above the word "Solingen". This is one of the rarer logos. It has chequered grips secured with two pins and retains the leather pad at the cross guard. The polished steel blade is in excellent condition. C1959 G 3L-Style Bayonet for the Heckler & Koch Assault Rifle and Scabbard. BAYO 376. - BAYO 376
It is not clear whether this type of bayonet was originally developed by Heckler & Koch of Oberndorf or by Carl Eickhorn of Solingen. The design had emerged by 1959 when the G3 rifle and its bayonet were adopted by the West German military. Blades are of the style originally developed in the USA for the M3 trench knife and are unfullered, single-edged and flat-backed for the rear section and then assume a double-edged diamond section running to the spear point. Blades are however of 'reversed' or 'upside-down' orientation with the main cutting edge forward of the muzzle ring. The steel cross-guards are straight with large muzzle rings and virtually no opposing quillon. Four variant cross-guards may be encountered, classified here as Broad Plain, Broad Notched, Half Notched as is this example and Narrow Plain. The two notched styles of guard are most appropriately mated to scabbards which have a spring-catch just to the rear of their throats. The scabbard catch engages the crossguard notch to retain the bayonet when sheathed. The seven groove plastic one piece grip is in very good order with 23mm flashguard, as is the blade which is only showing minor signs of use. The scabbard with webbing frog is marked ‘U.S. M8A1’ is virtually unmarked. The price includes UK delivery. BAYO 376. (German Box 1)

*Dated WWII* S84/98 III Bayonet with Scabbard and Leather Frog. BAYO 375 - BAYO 375
The Seitengewehr 84/98 was the most widely issued German bayonet of the Second World War. It was used in conjunction with the Karabiner 98k rifle (see FIR 7358). It was a development of a design which had first been introduced before the First World War, for use by machine-gunners and cyclists. Initially these bayonets were produced by modifying obsolete Model 71/84 bayonets. However, during the First World War production of new S84/98 bayonets took place, as they were simple to manufacture and used less metal than the standard S98 bayonet. The adoption of the K98k rifle in 1934 prompted the manufacture of quantities of an improved S84/98. This 1940 dated example was made by ‘Coppel G.m.b H’ (The Alexander Coppel Solingen Company was founded in 1821. Besides steel goods the company also produced weapons. This meant that the company belonged to the most important sectors of Solingen’s industry. In 1862 the company was considered to be the third largest in the city. Until the First World War, it was in a “sales association” of five Solingen arms manufacturers who sold their products worldwide) which is stamped clearly to one side of the blade. The number ‘5349’ and ‘C’ is to the other. The pommel has two waffenampt stamps. The spine of the blade is marked ‘40’ for manufacture in 1940. The all metal scabbard is in excellent order and is stamped ‘5195’. The leather frog is in equally good order with a nice patina and all stitching and metalwork in place. They only carry the 2 line trademark of Anker-Werke Bielefeld with no dates, cyphers or other firm markings. There is however a number "493" stamped on the crossguard. WW2 Era Nazi German Wehrmacht Armed Forces & Police Units M98 NCO’s Short Dress Bayonet With ‘In Memory Of My War Service’ Etched Panel Blade, Scabbard & Leather Frog. Sn 20926 - 20926
This is an original WW2 Nazi German M98 dress bayonet and scabbard. Short 7 ¾” blades were carried by NCO’s while longer blades (9 ¾”) were carried by enlisted personnel (see the book 'German Clamshells' page 15 by Gary L. Walker & R.J. Weinand). The dress sidearm for military and civilian uniformed formations was designated the M98 Dress Bayonet. This bayonet represented a stylised form of the S. 84/98 bayonet purchased by the individual for wear with the walkout dress uniform. This example has a rifle mortise and push button release (not designed to be fitted to a rifle, the stud button is functional but mortise often too small for rifle attachment. Other examples have false stud buttons or no button). The mortise of our bayonet has its original red felt lining (the coloured felt mortise insert denoted service assignment. Red felt denotes issue to Wehrmacht Armed Forces or Police Units). It has a clean 7 ¾” blade (12 ½” overall). There is no visible makers name on the blade and is fitted with original leather washer. One side of the blade has a crisp etched panel with Oak Leaves, Nazi Eagle with Swastika and Greman text which roughly translates to ‘In Memory Of My War Service’. The cross guard and pommel are nickel plated. The black Bakelite or Plastic grips are chequered and secured with two rivets. It has its original black military issue scabbard with lozenge shaped frog stud. The scabbard is fitted with an original period leather frog. There are no date or manufacturer marks on the frog and all leather and stitching are intact. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 20926 (box 1)
