Birthday Cake Decorating:
A Stylish Modern Cake

Another birthday cake decorating idea to add to the list. This stylish modern cake was made for my brother's birthday. Actually, his girlfriend also shares the same birthday as he does, so this cake was made for her, too.

So, since this is a his and her cake, I chose neutral colors like green and brown. I made it look like a gift box with a nice bow on it.

For this cake, I use a two layers of 12" round cake. I frosted it with uncolored buttercream and made the lid green using this technique from the gift box cake tutorial. I then chilled the cake after the lid was made.

I made a bow from brown fondant the night before making the cake.

Using different sizes of round cutters, cut out some circles from brown and blue fondant. Place on the "lid" part of the cake.

Place the fondant bow on the top center of the cake. Using green buttercream, pipe out some broken line to look like stitches on the bow using tip # 1.

Make a border with petal tip # 104 using a conitnuous "U" motion. Pipe a bead boder on top of the ruffles using round tip #10.

Roll some brown fondant thin and cut out a plaque. Pipe some "stitches" on the plaque and write the greeting.
