Exhibiting in 2009

We have the pleasure of presenting the latest information regarding the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair 2009.

We are glad to report that after all our behind the scenes work we have gained a huge partner buy-in this year, including The Sage Gateshead, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, One NorthEast, Arts Council of England, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, and regional media partners Newcastle Chronicle and Journal (who also publish the Culture Magazine and Exclusive Magazine) from whom we will receive constant media coverage. We have received huge support from Newcastle City Council and Gateshead Council, and are in the midst of finalising national gallery media support. This will be backed by a full marketing campaign which is being managed by our specialist PR and Marketing agency Mitchellhaltonwatson with Director Wayne Halton personally overseeing the work.

Emerging artists.

This year sees the return of the emerging artists showcase with 15 unrepresented artists from the North East, nominated by the regions leading non-profit galleries, exhibiting their work in the Northern Rock Foundation Hall to view and buy.

Exhibiting alongside their nominated artists are four critically engaged galleries, Vane, Globe Gallery, Locus + and Northern Print.

The showcase provides an excellent opportunity to spot fresh talent in the arts world and catch these up and coming artists at an early stage in their career.

The Sage Gateshead, for those not familiar with it, is a world class venue designed by Sir Norman Foster and home to the Northern Symphonia. Once again we have secured a unique opportunity to use this venue for the Art Fair enabling us to help build the event into one of the major Arts events in the North East. The venue itself has a huge north facing glass canopy with 4 sets of stairs, 4 lifts and open balcony style aspects for both levels with stunning views across the quayside creating a truly spectacular setting for the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair.

We have had great interest from exhibitors in 2009, all but a few of the concourse level stands have been taken but for all availability please ring Vincent or Andy. Do feel free to talk over any questions, queries you may have and clarify the costs of your preferred stands. Stands start from just £875 for 5 linear metres on level 1. Making this a great Fair to promote and sell work for your gallery in a market we and our partners are rapidly developing.

The exhibition will bring together 45-50 art dealers and galleries under one world-renowned roof at The Sage Gateshead! It is an opportunity to present work on:

  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Drawing
  • Photography
  • Prints
  • Video
  • Audio and installation work

Why exhibit?

  • Expose your company to many high calibre potential clients
  • Raise/maintain your company profile
  • Generate more sales
  • Market, sell and launch your work
  • Develop/maintain brand awareness
  • Meet your competitors and benchmark your business

We are glad to report that after all our behind the scenes work we have gained even more support for 2009, this includes:

The Sage Gateshead, HSBC, The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, The Bupa Great North Run, Arts Council England, North East and Gateshead MBC. Now regarded as one the best supported fairs outside London.

Exhibitor feedback 2008

  • All exhibitors rated the venue, location and organisation as excellent or very good. Marketing and atmosphere were rated between excellent and good, and the visitor quality and number varied from excellent to moderate with the majority saying very good.
  • Most exhibitors exceeded sales expectations, and follow up sales and contacts, with a huge 89% feeling they got value for their investment.

All exhibitors gave feedback that they would like to exhibit again in 2009.

Marketing

A high profile event such as this will follow an extensive marketing programme, incorporating a mix of website, advertising, direct mail and PR, being managed by our specialist PR and Marketing agency Mitchellhaltonwatson with Director Wayne Halton personally overseeing the work. NewcastleGateshead Initiative will be heavily involved in the marketing process.

Last year an estimated £98,000 was spent on advertising, which featured the exhibiting galleries and the work, which they were showing. This resulted in the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair and gallery information reaching an estimated total of 5 million people.

Press & Marketing

We hope to continue relationships with specialist and national publications to assist the promotion of the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair.

In 2009, the high profile event followed an extensive marketing programme incorporating a mix of PR with many marketing partners including The Sage Gateshead, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Arts for Business, Arts Council North East, ONE North East, Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council, and media partners the Newcastle Chronicle & Journal (NCJ Media) and Art of England.

The NewcastleGateshead Art Fair also hopes to continue working alongside NCJ Media. Along with its main daily papers, NCJ Media has numerous publications including the monthly 'Culture' magazine and Exclusive. Art of England is one of the widest read magazines for galleries and art buyers and sold in leading newsagents across England.

Every year literature distribution will see the circulation of 120,000 promotional leaflets covering Manchester, Yorkshire, the North East, Scottish Boarders and Edinburgh, hitting local and tourist hotspots along with information centres and places of high population.

This works alongside our own extensive e-marketing, advertising, direct mail, posters, banners and online promotions.

About Us

Andy Balman started in events and moved into the Arts setting up and running the Biscuit Factory, Europes biggest commercial art gallery based in Newcastle. Andy has now decided to move from the Biscuit Factory to spend more time on developing the Art Fair into an internationally recognised event and present a platform for leading galleries and artists to profile themselves in NewcastleGateshead.

Vincent Woods started within the arts industry having studied fine art and moved into event management setting up Benchmark Communications which are now the leading event management company in the North East. He worked on large corporate events producing and directing both live events and video productions for many blue chip companies including Proctor & Gamble, Nissan, Sage, Thorn, Nike, and Ever-ready. His work for the national online retailer MoonAtMidnight featured a campaign entitled "Batman never wears a Batman t shirt" that won several marketing awards for the offbeat presentation of Batman apparel including hoodies, sweatshirts and the now famous Batman t shirts. When asked about the viral success of this campaign, Vincent commented, "It's obvious we tapped into a huge fan base that we suspected existed, but until we put this out there, we had no idea of the intensity of the love for Batman. Sales of Batman t shirts, and all the apparel items bearing the Dark Knight took off. Social media then picked up on the idea that Batman never wears a Batman t shirt and a large number of spin off memes got created by others. I can't really take the credit for this amazing following that Batman has, but we definitely proved it's really a monster!"

"The iconic Sage Gateshead, which has attracted high profile events ranging from Party conferences to world music festivals to major retail events, will provide a spectacular venue. Jane Robinson (Assistant Chief Executive)
Gateshead Council

"I am delighted to offer the backing of the City Council to the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair. The 2007 event seemed to be a real success and I'm sure an Art Fair on Tyneside will grow and grow as the market develops.

"As you know the Council is keen to ensure that events of national impact take place in our area, and working through Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, will support such events through a range of means."

Paul Rubinstein (Director of Policy/Assistant Chief Executive)
Newcastle Council

"BALTIC is pleased to be working with the organisers of the Newcastle Gateshead Art Fair to build on the success of its inaugural Fair in May 2007. We are developing a series of seminars and talks around our Collectors Series and aim to co-ordinate a range of activities over the period of the Fair. There is a natural synergy between the Fair and BALTIC’s Collectors Series and we hope that by working together both projects will go from strength to strength."

"I was delighted with my own particular purchases this year [2007]! It's also a terrific way of picking the brains of the experts, and finding out about new and upcoming talent. It brought lots of people into the region, and I'd love to see it grow and prosper."

Wendy Gibson (BBC TV Presenter )

"A number of HSBC’s staff, customers and guests bought work, some for the first time, and some to add to existing or growing collections; we’ve had many enquiries as to when the next Fair will take place. The organisers generated genuine interest from visitors who have shown great enthusiasm to build their knowledge of, and collections of art

"Planning the 2008 event at the permanent location of The Sage Gateshead I have no doubt that the Fair will build on the high profile of 2007 and develop the art buying market this year and beyond."
