From the school yards of the South Bronx to the tops of the Billboard charts, rap has emerged as one of the most influential musical and cultural forces of our time. In The Anthology of Rap, editors Adam Bradley and Andrew DuBois explore rap as a literary form, demonstrating that rap is also a wide-reaching and vital poetic tradition born of beats and rhymes.

This pioneering anthology brings together more than three hundred rap and hip-hop lyrics written over thirty years, from the “old school” to the “golden age” to the present day. Rather than aim for encyclopedic coverage, Bradley and DuBois render through examples the richness and diversity of rap’s poetic tradition. They feature both classic lyrics that helped define the genre, including Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s “The Message” and Eric B. & Rakim’s “Microphone Fiend,” as well as lesser-known gems like Blackalicious’s “Alphabet Aerobics” and Jean Grae’s “Hater’s Anthem.”

Both a fan’s guide and a resource for the uninitiated, The Anthology of Rap showcases the inventiveness and vitality of rap’s lyrical art. The volume also features an overview of rap poetics and the forces that shaped each period in rap’s historical development, as well as a foreword by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and afterwords by Chuck D and Common. Enter the Anthology to experience the full range of rap’s artistry and discover a rich poetic tradition hiding in plain sight.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

English professors Bradley and DuBois make history in this rock-solid collection of hundreds of thoughtfully selected lyrics of recorded rap music produced between the late 1970s and now. For fans, this is an obvious treasure. For skeptical listeners and readers, this mega-anthology strips away rap’s performance elements and allows the language itself to pulse, break, spin, and strut in poems of audacity, outrage, insight, sweetness, and nastiness. Here is meter and rhyme, distillation, metaphor, misdirection, leaps of imagination, appropriation, improvisation, and a “vivid vocabulary” that can be explicit, offensive, funny, dumb, and transcendent. In their thorough and energetic introduction, Bradley and DuBois offer a concise history of rap and a keen discussion of its aesthetics, with an emphasis on written lyrics. Proceeding chronologically, from “The Old School,” 1978–84, to “The Golden Age,” 1985–92; “Rap Goes Mainstream,” 1993–99; and “New Millennium Rap,” they analyze each movement and profile each artist or group, from Kurtis Blow to Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, NWA, Queen Latifah, Common, Lil’ Kim, Outkast, 2Pac, the Wu-Tang Clan, Eve, and legions more. Electrifying. --Donna Seaman

“From the Sing Song cadence of the slave preachers to the emotional bravery of Tupac Shakur to the clarity of Queen Latifah…for all the hearts and heads and voices who have still to be heard: We Now Have an Encyclopedia. Good for us. Much needed. Much needed.”—Nikki Giovanni (Nikki Giovanni)

"
The Anthology of Rap is an instant classic. It brings together the lyric poetry of some of the greatest artists of our time. Hip Hop is here to stay and rap lives forever—on the stage and now on the page!"—Cornel West

(Cornel West)

"These Rappers' lyrics love. Cut. Curse. Fight. Teach. Play. Pray. Testify. They bring us the pace of sound. The swiftness of sound. The discordant way of looking at the world of sound. The Blackness of sound. The new bebopic beat of sound. These are word sorcerers who love language and hablar sin bastón (speak without a crutch)."—Sonia Sanchez (Sonia Sanchez)

"This monumental encyclopedia of rhymes is great for hip-hop newbies or longtime fans, lyric lovers and poetry devotees. It's an invaluable reference on hip-hop history spanning from Afrika Bambaataa to Kanye West."—Touré (Touré)

Whatever the stakes or the messages contained in this monumental volume, the like-sounds that used to be the engine of English poetry drive and power these energetic lyrics.”—Billy Collins

The Anthology of Rap, which covers everything from Afrika Bambaataa to Young Jeezy, it's hard not to appreciate rap's astounding love of words, of the way they fit together and play off each other, and of how meaning can be layered upon meaning to get at a deeper truth. Which sounds an awful lot like poetry."—Joshua Ostroff, The Globe and Mail (Joshua Ostroff The Globe and Mail)

Adam Bradley is a New York Times best-selling author on popular culture and a scholar of African American literature. His commentary has appeared on PBS, NPR, and C-SPAN as well as in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.

Adam is the author or editor of several books, including Book of Rhymes: The Poetics of Hip Hop, The Anthology of Rap, Ralph Ellison's Three Days Before the Shooting. . ., and Ralph Ellison in Progress. In 2011, he collaborated with the rapper and actor Common on Common's memoir, the national best-seller One Day It'll All Make Sense.

Adam's latest book, The Poetry of Pop (Yale University Press, 2017), encompasses a century of recorded music. In it, Bradley traces the song lyric across musical genres from early twentieth century Delta blues to mid century rock ‘n’ roll to today’s hits. As Bob Dylan’s recent win of the Nobel Prize in Literature suggests, an assessment of the popular music lyrics’ value as art is timely and resonant. At once a work of musical interpretation, cultural analysis, literary criticism, and personal storytelling, The Poetry of Pop illustrates how words and music come together to produce compelling poetry, often where we least expect it.

What unites Adam's work is his belief that the most powerful cultural expressions are equally the product of tradition and innovation. This vernacular process of fusing the inherited or even the imposed with the imagined helps explain the beauty we find in everything from a classical symphony to a gutbucket blues, from an epic poem to a rap freestyle.

Adam's work has garnered significant attention from scholars, critics, and readers alike. The New England Book Festival, the San Francisco Book Festival, and the Book of the Year Awards all honored The Anthology of Rap as one of the best anthologies of 2010. Both New York magazine and the Village Voice named it a Best Book of the Year. Three Days Before the Shooting. . . was named a Book to Watch For by Oprah's O Magazine, a Best Book of 2010 by The Root, and one of the year's best works of outsider fiction by NPR.

Adam was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and was home‐schooled by his grandparents until high school. He earned his BA at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where he began working on Ralph Ellison's papers as a nineteen-year-old assistant to Ellison's literary executor, John Callahan. Adam earned his Ph. D. in English from Harvard University, studying with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Cornel West. He is professor of English at UCLA where he direct the Laboratory for Race & Popular Culture (RAP Lab).

I was at the right place at the right time to witness rap/hip-hop emerge. This book is a great source touching on the major artist during the evolution of rap. It provides a brief history about the artist then the lyrics of the most significant works. Obviously it is not all inclusive but an essential to obtain a basic understanding of the pillars of the genre. Book arrived on time and safe, perfect condition, excellent source.

I didn't like Rap when it started. I'm used to being able to hum a tune. But I kept on getting more curious about it. Why did anyone like it? What is Rap? I ignored it for years. It was only until I actually began to listen to it and to its words that I began to realize that it was poetry. Then I started to realize how beautiful that poetry is. Besides enjoying the poetry, I have been able to accept the Rap medium for that art form. Rap makes perfect sense now. This anthology helps reveal the poetry and the meanings of the poems become more recognizable and understood, at least for this novice. I believe this medium is a valuable contribution to both music and poetry. This collection is a valuable contribution to appreciating Rap. I hope to see more.

1st off, all of you dissing this book should probably read the book first. reading a Slate review without reading the book is a terrible way to judge it and then to post negative things about it. Try reading what Chuck D has to say about it or the New York TImes or LA Times.

as a longtime lover and historian of rap, i found this to be the best book ever written on the subject. they were able to elevate rap to a serious academic artform with the publication of this book. Most of the rappers support this work and claim it is spot on. The Slate editor just seems a little jealous. I'm gonna trust the New York Times book review and Chuck D. over some nobody writing in Slate.

I read this book and think its awesome.

Went to a Hip Hop art exhibit a couple of years ago and this book was there. I skimmed through it and had to have it. The author chronologize the songs base out when they were released but also talked about what was going on at the time and how people were feeling at the moment. It took me back. I would think about how old I was, how I felt when the song came on, and what was going on in the media. I bought two as gifts and gave one to my friend who is a professor (she uses this in one of her classes) and the other I gave to my cousin this past christmas and he posted on FB that I gifted him a Bible (so I guess he loves it).

It is no easy task to edit and transcribe volumes of rap music that spans centuries and tighten it into one book. If you think so, create your own book.

This book is very comprehensive and it's about time that someone put what we all know into print for reference.

That said, I bought this for a Christmas gift and it was well received. Mistakes or not this book is perfect to add to your collection. The price was inexpensive compared to other books. The hardcover is large, heavy, and has a beautiful cover.

It's really depressing that Hip Hop has been overlooked as a form of poetry until Yale University threw an anthology book together in 2010. However, I absolutely love this as a referencing resource, I'm a Hip Hop Blogger and I strive on keeping my articles historically accurate. Not only does this book have a ton of poems from artists of every era, and every genre, it also describes why they were so important to the Culture and society.
