MIT leads among campuses worldwide in the number of US patents granted in 2023. For the 10th consecutive year, it ranks No. 1 among colleges on a single main campus, underlying the impact of innovation and the critical role of technology transfer.

Elizabeth Ng ’78 is CEO of Ocean Biomedical, which is working on potential therapies for several types of cancer. “If a treatment keeps patients alive long enough for the next innovation to come out, maybe you can call it a cure,” she says.

After studying human biodynamics, “I became interested in applying my engineering expertise to women’s health issues,” postdoc Shaniel Bowen says. She now studies women's sexual anatomy and health while also working to interest young women in STEM careers.

Immunai’s founders were researchers at MIT when they launched their company to help predict how patients will respond to new treatments. “Our starting point was creating what I call the Google Maps for the immune system,” Noam Solomon says.

A new technique teaches a large language model to perform a safety check on an AI chatbot so it doesn’t give toxic responses. “Our work is an attempt to reduce the human effort to ensure a safer and trustworthy AI future,” Pulkit Agrawal says.
