As traders awaited this morning’s data with bated breath futures were trading right around unchanged levels. Following three consecutive months of disappointing inflation data this morning’s CPI report was about in line with expectations while retail sales came in light. In response yields and the USD index moved lower while S&P futures tested the aforementioned all-time highs. With the VIX approaching the YTD lows sub-13, equities have extended those gains since the open. The S&P 500 is up just under 1% quickly approaching 5,300, keep in mind it is options expiration so if markets start to break above that could create a bit of a scramble. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is nearing its own 40k milestone up ~0.75% to 39,850. The move lower in yields is helping the Russell 2k outperform modestly despite the fact that most of the Meme stocks that ripped yesterday have given up much of those gains. With the major catalyst out of the way trading activity has picked up again with notionals tracking about inline with prior YTD averages, so the summer doldrums haven’t kicked in just yet.
