New York’s highest court has overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction and ordered a new trial. The Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that the judge at the disgraced movie mogul’s landmark #MeToo trial prejudiced him with improper rulings. That included letting women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case. The 72-year-old Weinstein is serving a 23-year sentence in New York. He’ll remain imprisoned because a 2022 conviction in a Los Angeles rape case resulted in a 16-year term. Weinstein's lawyer called the reversal a “tremendous victory.” A dissenting judge called it part of a “disturbing trend” of reversals in cases involving sexual violence.

New York's highest court overturned the 2020 rape conviction of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. The decision Thursday by the New York Court of Appeals reopens a painful chapter in America’s reckoning with sexual misconduct by powerful figures. The court found the trial judge prejudiced Weinstein with “egregious” improper rulings. That includes a decision to let women testify about allegations that Weinstein wasn't charged with. Weinstein will remain imprisoned because he was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape and sentenced to 16 years. New York prosecutors have indicated they plan to retry Weinstein.

It looks like the third time will be the charm as the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival prepares for The Rolling Stones. The festival spans two weekends and opened Thursday with dozens of acts on 14 stages. The Stones play next Thursday, and tickets for that day of music have long been sold out. Festival organizers thought they had landed the band for the 50th Jazz Fest in 2019 but the appearance was canceled then because lead singer Mick Jagger had heart surgery. They tried again in 2021, but a surge in COVID-19 cases ultimately forced the fest to cancel.

The Chicago Bears picked USC quarterback Caleb Williams to open the 2024 NFL draft, the first of six QBs in the top 12 picks. The Commanders selected Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick overall. With the first pick since parting ways with Bill Belichick, the Patriots picked quarterback Drake Maye at No. 3 overall. The Falcons made the first stunning pick of the NFL draft by taking quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick overall. Then Minnesota traded up to take J.J. McCarthy at No. 10, and Bo Nix went to Denver at No. 12.
