WHEN Andy Ormston founded AM Medical Services in 2003 after 11 years in the Royal Air Force, little did he know how big the company would become.

Now it boasts 20 vehicles and was recently approved and registered by the Care Quality Commission.

The company is the only professional private Ambulance provider in the town, and recently launched a service unique to the area – a specialist ambulance transfer unit capable of transferring patients from birth up to 62 stone in weight.

The vehicle, which cost around £60,000, also carries emergency equipment to allow patients requiring specialist care to be rapidly transported to hospital.

It is the only vehicle of its specification in the world and Andy said it has already proved extremely popular among the town’s patients, including those who have undergone weight loss surgery.

“It allows a smooth, dignified approach to dealing with larger patients, while carrying the latest equipment,” he said.

“These patients need to be dealt with in a dignified way. We have had some really positive feedback.

“With the rise in obesity, we are seeing more demand for this service.

“We also have an off-road vehicle, equipped with all life-saving equipment needed to stabilise a casualty.”

Andy has gained experience in a variety of roles before setting up AM Medical Services, including working as a medic in some of the largest RAF medical centres. He was awarded the Joint Coalition Commanders Commendation for medical services to the Armed Forces in the Middle East.

In 1996 he joined the NHS Ambulance Service where he qualified as a paramedic, and then a paramedic training officer, later qualifying as a clinical lecturer and emergency care practitioner.

The company also provides paramedics to cover events.

Andy said: “We had about 25 members of staff at the Arts Festival and five down at the Old Town Christmas lights switch-on recently. We have a brilliant team.

“The best part of the job is providing the service and receiving such positive feedback.

“And the worst part? I can’t think of anything. Within the next five years I would love for us to become a national company.”
