Saturday Drawing of sorts....seeing sounds

Until lock down I was working in a library.  Apart from the primary function as a place to store and order books, the library is a place for quiet study so I am used to silence.  Noticing every footstep, whisper or electronic ping from a gadget that hadn't been silenced I was used to hearing the tiny sounds of life, but the quiet of lock down is different. There is quiet everywhere.  In a house with two of us working in a small space we keep it quiet so we can concentrate.  Now the sounds that mark my day are people passing in the street, the kettle boiling on the stove, the swish of the washing machine and the bird song.
I know it's Saturday because I've got the radio on.

What does listening look like?  Give a colour or a shape to the sounds you can hear. Do the trees sound different now that the leaves are full and green?  I liked hearing rain this week.  Think Kandinsky..

Saturday Drawing of sorts ....Trees

Like many other people during these strange days I have been making the most of the opportunity to go for a walk each day.  This week it has felt to me  as though nature is in sympathy with us who are staying in doors and presenting itself at it's most soothing, stunningly beautiful and bountiful.  As I walked through Mill rd cemetery one evening this week I couldn't help looking at the bushes and trees as one great big drawing.
Draw a tree.  Fill the page, make it as wild and winding as possible. You can add birds and flowers or any other creatures but be adventurous and free with colours, lines and layers.

Happy Easter

Saturday Drawing of Sorts.... Decorate a phrase or line of poetry of your choice.

William Blake wrote poems and decorated borders.  You don't have to write a poem, unless you have one to hand, buy maybe use a favourite saying (home sweet home currently comes to mind!) or a recipe, some words from a song, any text you wish, then embellish, decorate the borders.

Use any media you enjoy. I love the feeling of using pencil or pen on colour: it could be crayon, watercolour or what you will! Experiment! Play!

I have taken inspiration from Christina Rossetti's 'What is Pink?'

And some that have been sent in.

Single Line Drawings

After some thought about the ways to share drawings is to do just do some and post them here.

Draw with me.

If you would like to join in then at 5pm today sit down with a pencil and paper.
Create a still life.  It can be some fruit, a bottle and a box.  Try to have different materials and shapes but it doesn't really matter.  Have five or six items to draw.
Put one item in front of you and draw it.  A single line, don't take the pencil off the page.  Add the next object and draw that.  Don't look at the page too much, keep your eye on the objects and add them in until you have drawn all the objects.
I will do this exercise at 5pm today Saturday 28th March and post my drawings here and on face book.  If anyone would like to post their pictures they can email them to me or post to facebook.

This is mine.  I've got to say I have forgotten what an effort it is to keep the pencil on the page.

Thanks for everyone who has sent drawings so far.

Saturday Drawing of sorts

I have always thought of drawing and visual arts as a kind of problem solving, and at a time when there are big problems to be solved maybe drawing can be part of the solution.

We may not be able to offer a museum with a comfortable room with materials and biscuits, but we can offer ideas for drawings for anyone who would like to to take part and join in.

I am growing this idea as I type so bear with me and be ready with a pencil....
