Cape Town

Wildlife Vacations in South Africa!

While in Central and East Africa the wildlife areas are being threatened by cattle grazing, in South Africa each year, about 500,000 hectares of land are being converted from cattle to wildlife reserves.

The Centre for Wildlife Management at the University of Pretoria estimates that there is more wildlife in South Africa today than at any time in the past 100 years.

The lion is the largest carnivore (i.e. meat eater) in Africa. It is also the largest of the cat species in Africa, and the second largest with the tiger being the largest. Tigers are not indigenous to Africa. (More on Lions)

African elephants are by far the largest land mammals. Ivory poaching has severely reduced the elephant herd populations, so they are now classified as endangered species.( More on African elephants)

African buffalo
African Buffalo

The African buffalo, an herbivore mammal, which is also known as the Cape buffalo, is the only species of buffalo that is natural to Africa. However, within this single species there are four sub-species. These sub-species are all found in conservation areas of Sub-Sahara.(More on the African buffalo)

Leopard
African Leopard

African leopards are very solitary animals. They can be found throughout Sub-Sahara Africa particularly in the mountainous forests of Central Africa, the grasslands, and even the savannahs. In the summer heat, they can be spotted draped over a branch of a tree. (More on African leopards)

African Rhinoceros
