Welcome to The Behavioral Medicine Research & Training Foundation

We offer distance education courses in Biofeedback and related courses. Courses are designed to meet the requirement for biofeedback certification via the BCIA and also offer CE credits.

Our programs are for clinicians, coaches, educators, and academic research professionals who want to incorporate biofeedback and applied psychophysiology into their practices. We provide biofeedback training to professionals from all over the world!

The Foundation was established in January, 2000 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of research and education in clinical behavioral medicine.

The Behavioral Medicine Research and Training Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization. We offer scholarships covering part of the cost of our courses to graduate students from any nation and to professionals from developing nations. We also fund research projects performed by graduate students majoring in Psychophysiology at Saybrook University. To cover these costs, 20% of the cost of your course(s) is considered a charitable donation to the Foundation. Your contribution is tax deductible to the extent of the law. We will provide a letter incorporating a receipt. Please keep this written acknowledgment of your donation for your tax records.

Which courses should I take for BCIA Certification?

If you have not had a college level course in anatomy & physiology, you need to take one. Our’s is designed to provide the information people need to perform behavioral interventions.

  1.  For general biofeedback certification: Take PEP001: general biofeedback.
  2.  For neurofeedback: Take PEP003: EEG Biofeedback A & I.
  3.  For  urinary incontinence / pelvic floor: Take PEP011 (available Sept ’17) Intro to behavioral interventions for pelvic floor disorders

Which courses should I take for QEEG Certification?

PEP007: Quantitative EEG is the 24-hour accredited didactic for certification

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) BCIA Certification Courses Available Now?

Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) had grown in use and gained stature in the medical and psychological communities. The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) has now created the HRVB certification for those practitioners who want to include it in their treatment offerings. BMRTF offers all the learning opportunities you need to become certified, including Anatomy and Physiology and Basic Biofeedback. Our HRVB course, taught by Dr. Paul Lehrer is accredited by BCIA and will provide very comprehensive learning. Our instructors can also offer mentoring and help with preparation for the exam. If you’re ready to become certified in HRVB through BCIA, please let us help you.

Quality Assurance:

When you take a CE course, how do you know that its content is any good?
Don’t take the instructor’s or organization’s word!  Look for independent evaluation of the program, courses, and instructors:

The program:

The Foundation’s program has been evaluated for quality by national and state level organizations such as the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance. The Behavioral Medicine R&T Foundation is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Behavioral Medicine R&T Foundation maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

The Courses:

Most of the Foundation’s courses have been evaluated for content and quality of presentation by national and state level organizations such as the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (BCIA).

The instructors:

The Foundation’s instructors are recognized as highly competent by their academic and clinical peers who promoted them academically, selected them for competitive grants (from NIH, the VA, the military, and private organizations), and accepted their publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals.

When you purchase courses from the Foundation, you get personal attention from our instructors, each of whom have decades of experience in psychophysiology. They can help you with decisions on which equipment to purchase, guide you through psychophysiological portions of interventions with complex patients, etc. Our courses can be started at your convenience and you progress at your own rate. You will interact with your instructors by e-mail at each stage in the course and learning process.

Besides online classes, we also offer:

Consultations: The Foundation provides consultation to clinicians on performing psychophysiologically based assessments and interventions. Our team of highly experienced experts can guide you to incorporating psychophysiological techniques into your practice and help you handle the most difficult patients. We also provide consultation to clinicians and students on research design and performance in psychophysiology. We’ll even loan you equipment to help get your research going.

Hands-On Training: We can conduct mentoring and training for people anywhere in the world because we use programs which show us what trainees’ computers are doing as they conduct assessments and interventions and can listen to the session through voice over internet protocols such as SKYPE.

Conferences: The Foundation hosts telephone conferences in which key experts gather to discuss crucial issues in psychophysiology.

Please note: Interested primarily in EEG?
We are now offering a neuroanatomy and physiology basic course. Prior to that, the material on neuroanatomy in our A&P course and our EEG biofeedback / neurofeedback course provide essential information you need to understand how brain structures and functions impact EEG biofeedback. Of most importance, typical neuroanatomy courses do NOT include much of the important information you need to know about how hormones and other functions influence the brain and can overwhelm anything we do with neurofeedback. People who want more depth in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology should take our advanced course in January.
