What happened in Kerry this week

A young man with a rare genetic disorder has been awarded a special achievement band to mark his 50th Killarney House Junior parkrun –  and despite his condition Cillian O’Leary lets nothing hold him back from the finish line.

Rising star Ewan Morris had the time of his life at the Irish Film and Television Awards last weekend – the young Tralee actor even got a compliment from Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who said the teen was great in his role in ‘Two for the Road’.

A Kerry mother is pleading with Taoiseach Simon Harris to make good on a promise he made SEVEN YEARS ago - so that her beloved boy can come home from hospital.

The State has invested €12 million in the acquisition of land for Ireland’s newest national and first marine park – the second of the country’s eight national parks that’s located in Kerry.

Fearless Killarney toddler Rachel Nolan is already swimming like a pro and showing exceptional prowess at her swimming lessons each week – the two-year-old was one of 14 Water Baby Heroes awarded at a special event in Dublin last week.

Plans are already underway to submit fresh proposals for a €70m housing development in Tralee, after permission for 235 new homes in the town was overturned this week.

Carol and Evelyn get the Royal treatment

Hats off to Carol Kennelly and Evelyn McDermott - the Kerry milliners have been selected amongst the world's leading headwear designers to be featured at this year's Royal Ascot, the glitziest event in the British horse racing calendar.

At the annual June meeting, which attracts hundreds of thousands every year and is broadcast in over 200 countries, the fashion is as important as the racing - with spectacular headwear being one of the main talking points.

This year, the ultra-prestigious Royal Ascot Millinery Collective will feature Tralee-based Carol and Evelyn, who is from Ballymac but is based in Dubai, amongst twelve milliners from around the world to be showcased.

Water baby Rachel makes a splash!

Fearless Killarney toddler Rachel Nolan is already swimming like a pro and showing exceptional prowess at her swimming lessons each week –the two-year-old was one of 14 Water Baby Heroes awarded at a special event in Dublin last week.

Rachel’s mom Catriona wanted to give her daughter every advantage when it came to swimming, as her own fear of water has held her back from enjoying the pool or the beach.

Meanwhile, little Rachel’s dad, Gavin takes swimming at his leisure, taking on the sea waves and wake boarding whenever he gets the chance.

Welcome to our new National Park!

THE STATE has invested €12 million in the acquisition of land for Ireland’s newest national and first marine park – the second of the country’s eight national parks that’s located in Kerry.

Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí - or the National Park of the Marine - extends to 70,000 acres of land and sea at various locations in the county, including the Conor Pass, Inch sand dunes, areas of Mount Brandon and the Owenmore River catchment and the waters around the Blasket Islands in Corca Dhuibhne.

Ireland's largest National Park, Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara includes Puffin Island, Sceilig Mhichíl and An Sceilig Bheag in South Kerry and the Kerry Head Shoals Special Area of Conservation (SAC) off the North Kerry coast.

Free hot meals now on the menu at Ardfert NS

At Ardfert NS, free, hot and nutritious meals are now on the menu after the school became one of the latest additions to a nationwide programme that is now delivering free meals to over 2,000 schools nationally.

Joining Ardfert NS on the free school meals programme will be 42 other Kerry schools - these Kerry schools form part of 900 primary schools across the country which have just become the latest additions to the free school meals initiative.

Other schools around the county that are joining the programme include Ballymacelligott NS, Castlemaine NS, Castlemaine NS, Faha NS, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Holy Cross Primary School, Nagle Rice Primary School, Scoil Naomh Eirc and Scoil An Ghleanna Pobal Scoil Náisiúnta and more besides.

Red Cross now recruiting for local volunteers

In a novel initiative to attract new recruits to meet an ever increasing demand for first aid and ambulance services, theTralee Red Cross are ready to give members of the public an exciting glimpse of life on the frontline as a volunteer with the life-saving organisation.

Tralee Red Cross Chairman Joe McDonnell explained that this 'Taster Session' will help people decide if the Red Cross is suitable for them, as he says:''Many people are looking for an organisation where they can volunteer but they are unsure what would be right for them.

“We hope to give attendees a broad overview of the humanitarian services we provide along with an outline of the various training programmes that will be offered to new members. We will also have some hands-on practice in some of the roles,”said Joe.

Kerry Rose hopefuls begin campaign

The Kerry Rose of Tralee 2024 entrants got a taste of what’s to come on their first official day of events this year.

The Kingdom’s Rose hopefuls got together last weekend to launch their official partnership with the new Kerry Rose Centre sponsor - Garvey's SuperValu, Tralee.

Centre coordinator Suzan O'Gara said: “We are delighted to have Garvey's onboard as our main sponsor, supporting the Kerry Rose Centre and making sure that we can really provide the best experience for anyone entering the Kerry Rose Selection in Kerry in 2024.
