Molten Salt Energy Technologies Web Site

Welcome!

This site is a reference for mainly energy-related, molten salt technologies, and will ultimately replace the web site:

The inspiration is the work the United States' Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) did by building and operating 2 successful Molten Salt Reactors (Nuclear Reactors) in 1954 (the ARE) and the 1960s (the MSRE).

The drawing to the right is from "ORNL-4812: The Development Status of MOLTEN SALT BREEDER REACTORS" (1972).

Why the USA stopped developing the MSR

Most people, upon learning about the amazing MSR, which some call "Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR)", naturally wonder why the USA abandoned the MSR.
The short answer is: It was a American, political decision.
The 4 page answer is here:

"Why the Molten Salt Reactor (MSR)
was not developed by the USA"
by Bruce Hoglund, November 2010.
